How the sizing works

Heater manufacturers size their units against a room’s volume in cubic feet, stepping up through standard bracket sizes (2 kW, 3 kW, 4.5 kW, 6 kW, and on up) as the effective volume grows. “Effective” volume means your actual cubic footage plus an allowance for anything that isn’t insulated wood — a glass wall panel or a glass door sheds heat quickly, so each one is treated as extra volume the heater has to cover.

This calculator applies that same bracket logic: multiply your room’s length, width, and height, add the glass allowances, and read off the recommended kilowatt rating. Use it to budget and shortlist heaters before you check the exact model’s own published range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does heater sizing use cubic feet instead of square feet?

A sauna heater has to warm the whole volume of air in the room, not just the floor, so manufacturers size heaters against cubic footage (length × width × height) rather than floor area. A tall room needs more heater output than a low one with the same footprint.

Why does a glass wall or glass door add so much to the estimate?

Glass, tile, and uninsulated stone lose heat far faster than a wood-panelled, insulated wall. Sizing charts compensate by treating each uninsulated surface as if it added extra effective room volume, so the heater has enough reserve capacity to hold temperature against the loss.

Should I round up or down between brackets?

Round up. An undersized heater will struggle to reach temperature on a cold day and will run flat-out constantly, shortening its life. A heater one bracket larger cycles on and off instead, which is both more comfortable and easier on the element.

Does this replace the manufacturer's own spec sheet?
