How Many Bathers? Planning Bench Space in a Home Sauna
Bench space is the quiet variable that decides how many people your sauna can actually seat, and it's one of the easiest things to misjudge on paper. A floor plan that looks roomy in a sketch can feel tight the moment four adults are sitting shoulder to shoulder, because comfortable seating needs real, specific linear space — not just an impression of enough room.
The seated allowance
Bathhouse design has settled on a fairly consistent number for seated bench space: about 24 inches, or 61 centimeters, of bench length per person sitting upright with feet on the floor or a lower bench. That's enough room to sit without shoulders touching a neighbor, and it's a minimum for comfort rather than a hard physical limit — many builders push it out a few inches further where the room allows, especially for a household that values a bit more breathing room.
Why lounging needs so much more
Lying full-length on an upper bench is an entirely different proposition. An average adult needs roughly 71 inches, about 180 centimeters, to stretch out with a little clearance at each end — nearly three times the space a seated spot requires. This is the reason seated capacity and lounging capacity aren't interchangeable numbers: a bench built for six seated bathers won't fit six people lying down, not even close, and conflating the two during planning is one of the more common sources of a disappointing build.
The classic two-tier layout
Traditional Finnish sauna design solves the capacity problem with a stacked layout: a lower bench nearer the cooler floor-level air, and a higher bench above it where the heat is more intense, often built deep enough to lie on. The key detail that trips people up is that a two-tier bench doesn't add its two levels' lengths together — both benches run along the same section of wall, stacked vertically, so the wall run only needs to be long enough for whichever tier holds the most people at once. A six-person two-tier room, split three per tier, needs a wall run sized for three people, not six.
That's a meaningful efficiency gain for a small footprint, letting a modest room seat more bathers than a single-tier layout ever could, at the cost of a taller build and a bit more framing complexity.
Choosing a bench depth
Depth is a separate decision from length, and it depends heavily on how the bench will be used. A seated-only bench is commonly built 20 to 24 inches deep — enough to sit with knees comfortably bent without the front edge cutting into the backs of the legs. A bench meant for lying down needs genuine shoulder-to-heel depth, and most builders aim for at least 24 inches, often extending out to 31 or 35 inches so an adult can lie flat without their legs hanging off the front edge.
It's worth deciding this early, because bench depth eats directly into the room's usable floor space. A deep lounging bench on both long walls of a small room can leave surprisingly little floor area in the middle, which matters for anyone moving around, adjusting the löyly, or just standing to stretch.
Planning around your household, not a showroom
The right capacity to plan for is the one your household and its regular guests actually need, not the largest number a showroom model can seat. A couple who occasionally hosts two friends doesn't need six-person capacity any more than a family of five needs a room sized for solo use. Overbuilding capacity costs real money in materials, floor space, and heater output, so it's worth being honest about typical use before settling on a layout.
Why the upper tier feels hotter
Heat rises, and a sauna room makes that fact impossible to ignore: the air near the ceiling and the upper bench is noticeably warmer than the air down near the floor, sometimes enough to feel like an entirely different room depending on where you're sitting. That's the whole logic behind putting the more intense, upper-tier bench above the milder lower one — it lets a single room offer a genuine range of heat intensity rather than one uniform temperature everyone has to tolerate equally. We won't put a specific number of degrees on that gap here, because it varies with room size, heater placement, and how long the room has been running; the honest version is simply that the difference is real and noticeable, and it's worth trying both tiers on your first few visits to a new sauna rather than assuming the upper bench is automatically the better seat.
One practical safety note that follows directly from that layout: standing up quickly from a hot upper bench, after a while in the heat, can bring on a lightheaded or dizzy moment as blood pressure adjusts — a real reason some people feel briefly unsteady getting up from a sauna. Bench material, briefly
Whatever depth and length you land on, the bench itself should be built from the same category of wood as the wall cladding — a low-resin softwood like cedar, aspen, or hemlock, milled smooth enough that bare skin can sit or lie directly on it without splinters, even once the wood has been through repeated heat-and-humidity cycles. Edges and corners are typically eased or rounded rather than left sharp, fasteners are kept below the surface or otherwise out of contact with skin, and slats are usually spaced with a small gap between boards so the wood can dry out and air can move underneath between sessions rather than trapping moisture against the frame. None of that is a substitute for a proper framing plan sized to hold real, moving body weight safely — that's a construction detail worth getting from a contractor or a detailed build guide rather than a bench-space planning article, but it's worth keeping in mind while you're still at the layout stage, since bench height and support framing are easier to plan together than to retrofit later.
Mixing seated and lounging on the same two tiers
Nothing requires both tiers of a two-tier bench to use the same seating style, and plenty of real builds don't. A common approach is a lower bench built for seated capacity — more bathers, shallower depth, less demanding on floor space — paired with an upper bench built shallower for lounging only when the room is lightly used, or built to the fuller lounging depth for whoever wants to stretch out in the hotter air above. Because the planner works one tier and one style at a time, the practical way to lay out a mixed room is to run it twice: once for the seated lower tier at your intended headcount, and again for the lounging upper tier at however many people you expect to actually lie down at once, which is very often fewer than the room's full seated capacity. Add the two recommended depths to your floor plan side by side, and you'll have a realistic sense of how much of the room's total footprint the benches consume before you've cut a single board.
This is also where being honest about actual use pays off again: a household of two doesn't need a lounging upper bench sized for four just because the seated lower tier is. Sizing each tier to how it will really be used, rather than matching the two tiers by default, is usually the more space-efficient choice.
Leave room to move
Bench length and depth are only half of the floor-plan question; the other half is what's left over once the benches are in. A room with deep lounging benches on both long walls can end up with a genuinely narrow aisle down the middle, which matters more than it sounds like it should — someone needs to be able to stand, turn around, reach the löyly water, and let another bather past without squeezing by. There's no universal minimum aisle width worth quoting here, since it depends entirely on your room's total footprint, but it's worth sketching the benches into your actual floor plan, to scale, before committing to a depth that looks fine in the abstract but eats more of the room than expected once it's built. It's a cheap check to do on paper and an expensive one to discover after the framing is already up.
